Malaysia’s Sandakan Airport to extend runway for international flights
Construction work for the extension of Sandakan Airport in Malaysia started and is expected to be completed by mid-2021.
The project includes the extension of the current runway from 2,133m to 2,500m and the construction of a new taxiway, which will connect the runway to the parking apron.
Expansion of the current aircraft parking apron, as well as the relocation and installation of associated approach lighting and runway equipment, is also being undertaken.
CBP implements biometric system at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, US
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched facial recognition technology at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to accelerate arrivals and departures.
The biometric entry-exit system automates the security process for international travellers by matching the traveller to the travel document using face comparison technology.
The technology is designed to prevent the illegitimate use of stolen or lost passports, helping officers to concentrate on the traveller interview instead of administrative work.

French security and identity solutions provider IDEMIA decided to increase its investment in biometric airport and border control solutions to boost business in the Asia Pacific and Australian markets.
The French company said it will invest an undisclosed amount towards better marketing its Gen 3.0 Border & Airport platform, as well as positioning its Canberra and Sydney teams close to client operations.
Built on the company’s contactless biometric technology, the platform allows an airport or other border checkpoint to carry out facial, iris and fingerprint recognition for traveller identification.
China opens huge Beijing Daxing International Airport
China formally opened new multi-billion dollar Beijing Daxing International Airport, which is nearly the size of 100 football fields.
The starfish-shaped airport was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Located 46km from the city, the airport is situated at the junction of the Daxing district and Langfang City, which is in the Hebei province of North China.
Suspected drone activity disrupts Dubai International Airport flights
Two flights were diverted to nearby airports due to suspected drone activity in the surroundings of Dubai International Airport.
The incident occurred on 22 September between 12:36pm and 12:51pm local time (GMT+0400).
Emirates flight EK433, from Brisbane to Dubai with a layover at Singapore, was diverted to Dubai World Central (DWC).
Gatwick Airport launches new information portal for aircraft noise
London’s Gatwick Airport introduced a new information portal designed to offer personalised information on aircraft noise to residents.
Information available in Gatwick’s Noise and Track keeping system has been made accessible through the new portal.
Claimed to be the first such tool in Europe, the portal uses an interactive approach to allow residents to find noise information based on their location. It displays videos to explain to users how the airport operates.
Greece approves sale of 30% stake in Athens International Airport
The Greek Government approved the sale of a 30% stake in the Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, which is owned by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF).
The announcement came after the decision was made by the Greece Governing Council of Economic Policy, following the recommendation of the Minister of Finance.
More than 40% of the airport is currently owned by the HRADF, which will carry out further privatisation processes for the facility.
British Airways cancels almost all flights due to pilot strike
British Airways (BA) cancelled nearly all 1,700 flights as pilots held a 48-hour strike to dispute pay.
British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA), which represents the pilots, said that the first day of the strike cost BA approximately £40m.
The strike was expected to affect around 150,000 to 200,000 passengers.
Bangalore Airport selects Datamatics to support digitalisation drive
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) teamed up with IT firm Datamics Global Services for digital transformation plans.
As BIAL’s digital partner, Datamatics will automate and digitise more than 170 of the group’s processes.
Datamatics is now responsible for streamlining the airport operator’s core processes by digitising its assets. It is helping BIAL to create integrated workflows for continuous information flow across various departments and multiple stakeholders.
L&T Construction wins deal to build Navi Mumbai International Airport
India-based diversified conglomerate L&T Construction secured a contract to build Navi Mumbai International Airport in India.
The contract was awarded by Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAPL), a subsidiary of the GVK group, which secured a deal to construct the airport in 2017.
A concession agreement for the project was reached in January last year.
