Germany is to suspend all remaining Covid-related travel restrictions on 1 June 2022 in time for its peak summer tourist season. This suspension will continue through to the end of August. Although the easing of restrictions is good news for the German travel industry, governmental authorities need to exercise some caution. The tourism industry in Germany is likely to receive a welcome boost thanks to the suspension of the remaining travel restrictions, making travel to and from the country much more accessible, especially with the peak tourism season beginning.
Germans are becoming less apprehensive about the pandemic
According to GlobalData’s 2021 Q4 Global Consumer Survey, which focuses on consumer attitudes toward Covid-19, German respondents are becoming less apprehensive about the pandemic. In Q4, 8% of respondents stated they were ‘not concerned’, and a further 28% said they were only ‘slightly concerned.’ These results show that opinion among German respondents shows a more positive outlook regarding the pandemic. As such, German residents and businesses are more likely to be open to the idea of welcoming more inbound tourists. This is in part attributed to the large-scale vaccine roll-out, as Germany is one of the most vaccinated countries in Europe, with 77.5% of the population having received the first dose, 77.5% also receiving the second dose, and 65.6% receiving the third dose, according to Our World in Data.
Easing of restrictions signals a shift back to pre-pandemic travel
The German National Tourist Office is encouraging travellers from the US to visit the country this year, showcasing its sustainability, responsibility and cultural sites. This has the potential to be positive for the German tourism industry, with targeted marketing building on the fact that Germany is the fourth most popular European destination for US travellers to visit. Germany is also the tenth most popular European destination for international travellers globally, according to GlobalData’s demands and flows database. As a result, this move could enable Germany to gain an early competitive advantage over its European counterparts, especially with US travellers.
Balance is key for Germany’s tourism industry recovery
Although the suspension of restrictions is good news for the German travel industry, governmental authorities need to exercise some caution and ensure contingency plans are in place. Measures to be suspended include the 3G rule requiring travellers to present proof of vaccination, recovery, or a negative test on entry. However, with the threat of future Covid-19 variants, backup plans must be put in place. Moving forwards, it will be a balancing act for authorities as the world learns to live with the disease.
Communication and collaboration with travel and tourism companies across Germany is essential. Nevertheless, Germany’s suspension of travel restrictions could potentially make 2022’s summer tourism season a pivotal time for the German tourism industry’s recovery.
