Bishop International Airport is located in the city of Flint in Michigan, US. It is spread over in 1,550 acres and is operated by Bishop International Airport Authority Board (BIAAB). The airport handled 4.97 million passengers in 2011.
A $16.8m terminal expansion project began in early 2011 and was completed in November 2012. The expansion increased the terminal capacity to two million passengers a year.

Bishop International Airport expansion
In March 2011, BIAAB initiated the bidding process for $16.8m terminal expansion project at the airport. The expansion increased the terminal capacity to serve two million passengers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided $7m in funding for the project and another $10m was imparted from airport reserve funds. The expansion includes increasing the size of passenger corridor, adding four new gates and increasing the terminal space to 47,000ft². It also includes electrical and signage installations, minor renovations to the terminal, utility relocation and other civil improvements.
In August 2010, a contract to expand the cargo area apron was awarded to Six-S. The scope of the contract included paving 17in thick concrete apron.
The airport underwent many expansions in the past. A $4.6m terminal airside expansion project was awarded to Sorensen-Gross Construction Services. The project was initiated on 10 May 2010 and completed in December 2010. It included construction of CNBC-themed store, a flint bar, Gateway Grille and replacing two jetbridges and constructing one new jetbridge. The funding allotted for the project included $3.41m from the federal share, $0.09m from the state’s share and $1.1m from the local share.
Phase I of terminal airside expansion at the airport began in May 2009. The expansion included upgrading the terminal ramp, deconstruction of runway 5/23 and construction of new runway 9L/27R.
In 2009, the airport received more than $11m in federal aid for the construction of taxiways and the expansion of aprons.
In 2006, the construction of luggage claim area was completed. The area was expanded with two additional luggage carousels.
In 2005, a $33.7m intermodal hub project began and completed in 2009. The project was intended to shift cargo from one form of transportation such as highways, rail, air or maritime to another. The intermodal project was funded with $10m grant from Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, while $6.6m came from federal, $4.5m from Michigan state and $12.6m from the airport.
Terminal features
The airport has one terminal, which was opened in 1993. The terminal consists of two floors. The first floor features four baggage claim areas, six airline ticket counters, car rentals and police. The second floor features the pre-security area which houses restaurant, bar and lounge, coffee shop, gift shop and book store. The post-security area on the second floor includes news stand and conference rooms.
The terminal has ten gates. Gates seven to ten are located downstairs and gates one to six are located on the second floor.
Master plan
The airport master plan was first prepared in 1990s by RS&H Engineering Company (RS&H). An update of the master plan was implemented by RS&H. The update envisioned two terminal expansions to accommodate more passengers, building intermodal cargo hub for fulfilling a variety of cargo needs, construction and expansion of auto parking spaces and car rental facility. The update also covered reconfiguration and realignment of the runways at the airport.
RS&H executed the master plan update by completing an FAR Part 150 noise and land use compatibility study to eliminate incompatible land uses.
Runways
The airport has two runways. The first runway (18/36) is 2,392m in length. The second runway (9/27) is 2,195m long. Both the runways are asphalt paved.
Bishop International maintenance facilities
The maintenance department of the airport takes care of the runways and grounds, and also handles the upkeep and maintenance of the entire airport terminal, the T-hangars and other airport buildings. The airport also has fire and police departments.
Car parking
The airport features both short and long-term car parking facilities located opposite to the terminal. The parking space is operated by Standard Parking Corporation.
