German airport operator Fraport has signed concession agreements with the government of Brazil for managing and developing the country’s Fortaleza International Airport (FOR) and Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) in Porto Alegre.

The company has been developing the foundation for the new Fraport Brasil airport companies, which are expected to take over operations at the two Brazilian airports by the beginning of next year.

Fraport had to establish Brazilian subsidiaries before the signing of the concession agreements, which will run for 30 years at FOR and 25 years at POA.

Fraport executive board chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said: “We have been closely watching the Brazilian market for some years and are excited to be operating at not one, but two airports.

"The concession agreements outline vital mandatory infrastructure projects that will significantly enhance overall operations, service performance and capacity."

“We are convinced of the great potential offered by the strategic, ‘best-located’ gateways of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre.”

Under the agreements, Fraport Brasil is responsible for developing the infrastructure at the two airports through a Mandatory Construction Programme.

The programme involves the expansion of the existing terminals and runways, as well as the redevelopment of taxiways, apron areas and the airport road system.

Fraport Global Investments and Management senior executive vice-president Aletta von Massenbach said: “The concession agreements outline vital mandatory infrastructure projects that will significantly enhance overall operations, service performance and capacity – thus benefitting airlines, passengers, airport business partners, as well as helping drive economic development in the respective airport regions served by Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports.”

FOR and POA will also be upgraded with new automated baggage management, security screening systems, and new aircraft boarding bridges.

In addition, several other modernisation projects will be carried out at the existing passenger terminals of the two airports.
