UK-based company Blighter Surveillance Systems has unveiled a new entry-level version of its Blighter B400 series Doppler ground surveillance radar, which is designed to be deployed at airports and other critical infrastructure sites.
The new low-cost system is said to provide the same benefits as a solid-state e-scan Doppler radar, such as effective detection capability at 4km for day or night operations in a variety of weather conditions.
Other benefits include low manning levels, zero maintenance, and lower installation costs and false alarm rates.
The company has also optimised its BlighterView HMI 2 software for perimeter security, enabling control over multiple radar and cameras (automatic slew-to-cue), and for creation of alert and exclusion zones.
In addition, BlighterView has been upgraded to facilitate easy integration with standard video management systems (VMS) with ONVIF compliance.
A usual Blighter airport or critical infrastructure site configuration comprises the new Blighter B400 Series radar, BlighterView HMI software, and slew-to-cue pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) thermal imaging surveillance camera systems.

By GlobalDataBlighter Surveillance Systems CEO Mark Radford said: “Our engineers have optimised the design of the new radar, the processing chain and the control software to better meet the needs of our critical infrastructure customers.
“We have re-engineered the Blighter B400 radar to get to a price point that is attractive to this market and that will deliver improved detection at a lower cost compared with CCTV, thermal imaging systems and low cost, short range mechanically scanned radars.”
The solid-state Blighter passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar uses its coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Doppler fast-scan processing to detect small and slow-moving targets, also in congested environments.
The radars are currently deployed at several international airports in Europe, the US, South America and Africa.
A Blighter radar / camera surveillance system has already been installed as part of the perimeter security solution at Heathrow Airport in the UK.
