Dublin-based CDB Aviation delivered the first of two A321neo aircraft to the low-cost airline on 4 May 2023 as part of a lease agreement from 2021.
This delivery forms part of the 13 CDB Aviation aircraft on lease to Volaris, with the delivery of the second A321NX expected to be delivered in the final quarter of 2023.
The Airbus A321NX forms part of the extensive aircraft portfolio of CDB Aviation which includes advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft such as the Boeing 737 MAX.
CDB Aviation’s Head of Commercial Luís da Silva said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating with the Volaris team this inaugural delivery of a GTF-powered A321NX from our order book.
“With the latest technologies that improve efficiency and sustainability, this aircraft is ideally suited to expand the reach of Volaris’ market-dominant domestic brand to markets in North and Latin America”.
The A321NX showcases new engine options that allow it to be more efficient than its predecessors. With the addition of new engines and wing changes, the aircraft can minimise fuel consumption and emissions.

By GlobalDataThe A321NX aircraft are powered by either Pratt and Whitney GTF engines or CFM International LEAP-1A engines.
According to global aircraft manufacturer Airbus, these new improvements allow the A321neo aircraft to bring per-seat fuel improvements of 20%, along with an additional range of up to 500nm or two tonnes of extra payload.
Jie Chen, CDB Aviation Chief CEO said “Achieving sustainable aviation is an industry-wide challenge that will only be solved by a collaborative and coordinated response. Therefore, we, as aircraft lessors, are playing an important role in this transition.”
Volaris’ Executive VP Holger Blankenstein highlighted how this collaboration with CDB Aviation fits in with their environmental and strategic aims: “We appreciate the ongoing partnership with our colleagues at CDB Aviation in meeting the needs of our fleet renewal strategy that will ensure our airline’s sustainable growth in the long term.
“With one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets in the Americas, our team remains committed to bringing the region’s passengers the best flying experience and the most modern technology aircraft.”
Volaris joined IATA to strive towards sustainable aviation while also supporting the concept of ‘fly net-zero’ towards the industry’s decarbonization by 2050, as stated in their sustainability programme.
According to their ESG targets, Volaris plans to have a 100% NEO fleet by 2028. This will allow them to reduce fuel consumption annually by roughly 15% and by 5,000 tons of CO² emissions per year per aircraft.
