Within the emerging innovation stage, missile aerodynamic guidance, aerial cargo delivery, and underwater ROVs are disruptive technologies that are in the early stages of application and should be tracked closely. UAV fuselage, multi-mode regenerative fuel cells and aircraft power distribution network are some of the accelerating innovation areas, where adoption has been steadily increasing. Among maturing innovation areas are aircraft power management and rocket engine assembly, which are now well established in the industry.

Safran is the leading patent filer in aircraft power distribution networks. Some other key patent filers in the aerospace and defense industry include General Electric, Airbus, and Rolls-Royce.

In September 2022, Safran launched its electrical engineering center of excellence. Safran and its subsidiaries have submitted patents relating to the networking of power onboard electric aircraft – a topic of increasingly relevance and interest in the industry. The company signed a collaboration agreement with Cuberg, a subsidiary of battery manufacturer Northvolt, in September 2023, to jointly develop an aviation energy storage system for future full electric and hybrid aircraft.

Airbus filed two patents in October 2022 relating to ways of cooling power distribution networks on aircraft.

In terms of application diversity, General Electric leads the pack. Safran and Rolls-Royce stand in second and third positions, respectively. By geographic reach, VoltAero holds the top position, followed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, AeroVironment, and Safran.
