The Government of India has laid the foundation stone for the new terminal building of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Gwalior Airport (GWL) in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
The Foundation stone for the project was laid by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, who was accompanied by the Minister for Civil Aviation and Steel Jyotiraditya Scindia and other dignitaries.
The new terminal building will be developed on 172 acres of land and built with an investment of INR4.5bn ($54m).
Existing airport infrastructure has the capacity for only 200 passengers during peak hours, while the runway can accommodate A-320 and ATR-72 aircraft types.
The terminal building will be built on a six times larger area, and its apron will have the capacity for 13 flights at a time and 1400 passengers per day, which is seven times more than the present capacity.
The new terminal structure will also have a 2.5MW solar power plant and rainwater harvesting technologies.
