Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in Nevada, US, has started a $500m expansion project called MoreRNO after securing approval from the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) board.

This project will involve building two concourses, marking the largest-ever investment in the airport.

The airport held a ground-breaking ceremony for its ticketing hall expansion, which is part of the overall project.

The $32m ticketing hall project will create an expanded facility with new technology and art.

MoreRNO will be partly funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), as reported by AXiNsider.

AXiNsider quoted RTAA Board chairman Adam Kramer as saying: “This is more than a great day for our airport, it’s a transformational time for our region.

“The gateway to Reno-Tahoe is being re-imagined and rebuilt for the next century. We are making the first and last impression on travelers better than it’s ever been before.”

The two concourses will feature a total of 28 new gates and are expected to enhance the experience for airlines, tenants, staff and passengers.

AXiNsider quoted RTAA CEO Daren Griffin as saying: “This investment in northern Nevada is not something we can do alone, and I can’t express enough the importance of the partnership with our airlines and elected officials, and the dedication of our Board and employees.

“This shows the commitment to air service in the Reno-Tahoe region.

“BIL’s aim is to increase capacity and passenger access, replace aging infrastructure, improve energy efficiency and airfield safety, encourage competition and provide good paying jobs.”

The project scope also includes roadway upgrades, construction of a terminal entry and exit and a remodelling of the terminal mezzanine among other works.

Last April, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began using new technologies and modified security procedures designed to protect travellers’ health and safety at RNO.
