Vnukovo International Airport has become the second Moscow airport to furlough staff as passenger traffic continues to plummet following the imposition of sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
Last month, Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport furloughed nearly a fifth of its staff due to reduced passenger traffic at the airport.
Citing two sources aware of the development, the Russian newspaper Izvestia reported that nearly 2,000 employees have been notified by the airport authorities about possible layoffs if passenger volumes continue to decline.
Year-on-year passenger traffic has declined by 19% at Vnukovo Airport, as some countries have now closed their airspace to Russian aircraft.
Vnukovo airport is said to have stopped all recruitment processes and reportedly given a new part-time schedule to existing staff members in order to maintain their medical insurance.
