The accreditation demonstrates that an airport has taken appropriate steps in line with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and ACI to ensure the safety of the passengers amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

It particularly assesses cleaning and disinfection, adherence to physical distancing measures, staff protection, physical layout and passenger communications and passenger facilities.

ACI North America President and CEO Kevin Burke said: “This programme is designed to help reassure the travelling public that airport facilities remain safe and that precautions are being taken to reduce any risk to their health.”

More than 600 airports have registered in this voluntary programme so far.

Commenting on the accreditation, GSP president and CEO Dave Edwards said: “The health and safety of all who pass through the airport is always our top priority.

“While no one could have anticipated the impacts from the coronavirus pandemic, GSP responded quickly with our Prepare for Takeoff Covid-19 response initiative. We are pleased ACI has recognised our ongoing efforts with the Airport Health Accreditation.”

The ACI Airport Health Accreditation programme was launched in July last year. Originally, it was scheduled to run for one year. However, the programme was extended for an additional 12 months in June 2021.
