Leonardo has secured a contract from Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide to install a baggage handling system, which incorporates safety and sorting functions, for the new Pier G at Terminal 3 of Frankfurt Airport in Germany.

The system will be capable of managing the bags of approximately five million passengers every year with its two Multi-Sorting Baggage Handling System (MBHS) cross-belt sorting machines.

Assuming overall management of the project, Leonardo will create a new baggage sorting system at Pier G, which is currently under construction.

The BHS will be delivered and installed as a stand-alone system next year, and expanded and integrated with the airport’s wider baggage handling system in the next phase.

The system includes MBHS cross-belt sorters that feature new technology and low energy consumption.

They will be joined by approximately 40 check-in stations, baggage arrival carousels and all related baggage transportation and security check subsystems, which will be in line with international standards.

In addition, the software to be provided by Leonardo will allow operators to monitor the system and manage baggage as it is sorted and processed towards boarding.

Several airports in Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific are already using Leonardo’s baggage handling technology.

Last April, Leonardo won a contract to install a baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport.
