GlobalData research has found the top airline companies trending based on their performance and engagement online. Using research from GlobalData’s Influencer platform, Verdict has named five of the top companies trending on airlines in Q1 2020.

1. American Airlines Group Inc – 189 mentions

American Airlines Group Inc. (AAG) is a provider of passenger airline services. It provides scheduled air transportation for passengers and cargo. The company operates hubs in Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, D.C in the US. It also collaborates with third-party regional carriers to provide the regional jet and turboprop services.

AAG is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the US. Temporary restraining orders to immediately halt the carrier’s U.S.-China service owing to health threats posed by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the re-entry of grounded passenger services mid this year, announcement of cargo-only flights to provide medical assistance, and new strategic partnerships to explore the potential of flights, were some of the popular topics discussed on Twitter in this quarter.

Ethan Klapper, a journalist and licensed aircraft dispatcher, shared as article on how the company utlising its grounded passenger aircraft to move cargo between the US and Europe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that airlines is a critical infrastructure industry in these times when the world is depending on ecommerce to support their basic needs.

2. Deutsche Lufthansa – 85 mentions

Deutsche Lufthansa AG (Lufthansa) is an aviation company that offers scheduled passenger and air freight transportation services. The company offers logistics services through its own freighters, chartered cargo aircraft and belly capacities on passenger aircraft. It also involves in VIP aircraft servicing, airline maintenance and aircraft overhaul services.

The launch of new, but exorbitantly priced routes between London and Newquay, cancellation of flights to mainland China and Hong Kong due to the coronavirus pandemic, contingency plans and airlines overflying the Baghdad region were some popularly discussed topics during the quarter.

Alex Macheras, an aviation analyst, tweeted on Baghdad becoming a busy zone for commercial air traffic, with British Airways, KLM, Qatar Airways, and others all overflying the area.

4. Alaska Airlines – 78 mentions

Alaska Airlines Inc (Alaska Airlines), a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group Inc provides passenger and cargo air services. Its services include flight bookings, online check in, reservation services, hotels booking, car bookings, and vacation packages. Alaska Airlines maintains a fleet of turboprops and jet aircraft.

Its hubs are located in Anchorage, Oregon, Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles. Alaska Airlines is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the US. Right from cutting 70% of its flights schedules to reducing executive pay, were some of the trending topics on Twitter this quarter.

Dominic Gates, an aerospace reporter of Seattle Times, tweeted on the airlines announcing plans to reduce its flight schedule by approximately 70% in April and May.

5. Qantas Airways – 72 mentions

Qantas Airways Ltd (Qantas) is an airline company offering transportation and freight services along with its affiliates and partner companies. The company provides domestic and international passenger transportation services; and air cargo, courier, baggage and forwarding, and express- freight services.

It provides worldwide air transportation services from Australia and New Zealand. Qantas is headquartered in Mascot, New South Wales, Australia. Fleet refresh goals, reducing capacity to almost 25% for the next six months, coordinating schedules and fares across regional routes, and suspending most A380 operations during the Covid-19 crisis, were some popular topics discussed in Q1 2020.

Jamie Creed, a chief correspondent of Reuters, tweeted that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) was allowing carriers such as Qantas, Virgin Australia and Rex to coordinate schedules and fares on 10 regional routes, as long as the fares were no higher than those in place.
