Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported a year-on-year decline of 16.2% in passenger volume in the month of November 2019.
According to figures released by its operator Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA), around five million passengers travelled through the airport last month. According to media reports, this marks the biggest decline in passenger growth in ten years.
AA revealed that the month’s flight movements totalled 32,510, a decrease of 8.3% from November last year.
The total cargo handled was 450,000t, which decreased 3.4% from last year.
Last month, transit traffic recorded a year-on-year increase of 6% and Hong Kong resident travel grew by 5%.
The airport reported the most significant decline in passengers from the mainland and South East Asia.

In the first 11 months of the year, the airport handled 65.8 million passengers. This marks a 3.4% fall from the same period last year, with 385,730 flight movements marking a fall of 1.3%.
According to data for the 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume dipped by 3% to 72.4 million while flight movements dropped by 1% to 422,835.
This August, the airport reported six million passengers and 35,655 air traffic movements, which is a decline of 12.4% and 3.5% respectively compared to 2018.
The decline was said to be caused by anti-government protests, which halted the airport’s operations for many days as protestors pressurised the government to respond to their demands regarding a now-withdrawn extradition bill.
