Thailand’s Krabi International Airport is set to introduce global IT provider SITA’s passenger technology at both domestic and international terminals.

The latest move is part of the airport’s plans to serve as a regional aviation hub under Thailand’s Department of Airports’ four-year strategic programme.

The airport will introduce SITA’s common-use passenger processing (CUPPS) platform AirportConnect Open at the self-service check-in kiosks at its terminals.

Krabi International Airport director Attaporn Nuang-udom said: “The Krabi province has a geographical advantage as it is situated between the spectacular Andaman and Gulf of Thailand coasts.

“Last year, Krabi saw more than four million visitors from various countries including China, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, Russia and South Korea, and over 30,000 flights departed from Krabi Airport.”

The new technology investment enables Krabi Airport to optimise terminal facilities and improve passenger experiences.

The move also enables the airport to upgrade its Airport Service Quality (ASQ) rating to meet international standards.

SITA Asia Pacific president Sumesh Patel said: “We are pleased to work with Krabi Airport and Samart Telcoms to bring the benefits of common-use technology, which will enhance the experience for both passengers and airlines.”

Krabi Airport’s development plans include the construction of a third terminal, as well as the renovation of Terminals 1 and 2 to increase capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 passengers per hour.

Construction plans are also underway to accommodate 40 jets at the aircraft parking bays at any one time.

Expected to be completed in 2022, Krabi Airport will serve as the regional aviation centre connecting Thailand to the rest of the world.

The CUPPS service and maintenance contract will be undertaken by Samart Comtech in partnership with SITA.

Last month, SITA secured a contract to power the new international terminal at Algeria’s Houari Boumediene International Airport, also known as Algiers Airport.
