Dutch airport company Royal Schiphol Group has signed an ‘Accelerating Innovation’ cooperation agreement with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).
The parties will engage in the development of new products and services more rapidly to improve passenger experience and operations at the airport.
The project will be led by TU Delft professor Sicco Santema at Industrial Design Faculty, which offers strategic design knowledge.
The innovations will be developed in living labs at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Eindhoven Airport, and Lelystad Airport.
According to the agreement, PhD candidates and 40 students in their final academic year at the university will serve at Royal Schiphol Group in the next five years.
Delft University of Technology Rector Magnificus Tim van der Hagen said: “Delft University of Technology wants to be involved in the achievement of concrete solutions to issues in society, including sustainability and mobility.

By GlobalData“This cooperation will enable researchers at Delft University of Technology to conduct research on passenger experiences and innovation in mobility at, and with, the living lab that is Schiphol. I look forward to seeing which new insights we will gain as a result.”
The two parties have previously partnered as part of efforts to develop a ‘future-proof airport’.
Last year, Schiphol and TU Delft collaborated with transport organisations and knowledge institutions to drive existing sustainable aviation developments under the ‘Smart and Sustainable’ plan.
They also joined forces for the airport’s new pier and terminal’s innovative signage.
Royal Schiphol Group president and CEO Dick Benschop said: “Constant innovation of our products and services for passengers and the operational process at the airport is at the heart of our strategy.”
