Los Angeles World Airports has released documents highlighting the need to reconfigure the runways and construct a passenger terminal east of Sepulveda Boulevard at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Officials of the Los Angeles World Airports, which manages LAX, published a 142-page environmental document, saying that the expansion will improve runway safety, and provide nearly 21 gates for domestic and international flights.
The expansion would also offer customs facilities for international arrivals, new baggage claim areas, as well as one more stop on the forthcoming people mover system.
According to the ‘Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project’ document, the airport will bring a new Concourse 0 to Terminal 1, as well as developing Terminal 9 on the eastern side of Sepulveda Boulevard.
Concourse 0 would be an 11-gate concourse facility (net increase of nine gates), while Terminal 9 would be a new 12-gate international and domestic passenger terminal. Taxiways would be modified to offer aircraft access to these new facilities.
New arrival and departure roadways would also improve access to and from the Central Terminal Area (CTA).

By GlobalDataConvenient access to Terminal 9 would be provided by a new Automated People Mover (APM) station and a pedestrian bridge across Sepulveda Boulevard linking Terminals 8 and 9.
The latest development plan follows an ongoing $4.9bn APM project at LAX. In March, LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) broke ground on the APM project.
Scheduled to become operational by 2023, the APM is an electric train designed to transform public transportation, decrease traffic congestion and provide a better experience to passengers travelling to LAX.
