Langkawi International Airport (LGK) in Malaysia has restarted operations after the completion of an expansion project that lasted nearly one year.

The airport is now capable of managing four million passengers per annum. Previously, it could only handle 1.5 million travellers annually.

Situated on the duty-free island of Langkawi in Kedah, the airport features retail and duty-free outlets, cafes and restaurants, besides premium passenger lounges.

Malaysia Airports acting group CEO Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin said: “I am very pleased that the expansion project was completed right on schedule. With this expansion, LGK will be better positioned to support Langkawi’s growth as a popular tourist destination, as well as act as a larger catalyst to its economic development.”

The expansion helped to boost the total gross floor area (GFA) of the terminal building from 15,000m² to 23,000m². Additionally, terminal facilities have been upgraded to cut congestion and enhance operational efficiencies.

The airport car park is now able to accommodate a total of 600 cars compared to 400 earlier. The counters at passenger touchpoints have increased from 24 to 30 check-in counters and from 14 to 18 immigration counters.

A new In-Line Hold Baggage Handling System (ILHBS) has been installed at the airport. The automated system has three levels of security screening facilitates.

The number of boarding gates has been increased to eight from five while adding and refurbishing existing washroom facilities.

Raja concluded: “We are confident that this expansion will further facilitate LGK’s growth. We are already seeing more interest from foreign airlines to operate from here. Currently, there are six airlines operating from LGK to four domestic destinations and five international destinations with combined weekly frequencies of 238.”
