The US Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded $659.8m in airport infrastructure grants for the modernisation of 390 airports.
The capital assistance, part of a $3.18bn Airport Improvement Program (AIP), includes 450 grants.
The new grants constitute the second round of funding and will support 664 projects such as terminals, aircraft rescue, runways, taxiways, aprons, firefighting vehicles and snow removal equipment.
USDOT secretary Elaine Chao said: “Our airports are essential in supporting $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and nearly 11 million jobs; these federal grants will help our airports to maintain safety and improve efficiency for freight and passengers.”
University of Illinois–Willard Airport in Illinois will secure $3m for repairing airport taxiways A5 and A6, while Johnson County Executive Airport in Kansas will be awarded $5.6m to repair runway 18/36.
Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana will receive $11.8m for the second phase of a five-phase terminal project. Lake Charles Regional Airport in Louisiana will secure $3.9m for the improvement of runway drainage system and reduction of wildlife hazards.

By GlobalDataDuluth International Airport in Minnesota will be offered $8.6m for the repair of the pavement for runway 9/27. Grand Rapids/Itasca County Airport in Minnesota will receive a grant of $1.1m, which will be used to repair the general aviation apron.
Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport in Minnesota will be given $5.8m to replace existing Taxiway S pavement as well as install runway lighting and sensors.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri will be awarded $10.2m to repair runway 12L/30R and the associated lighting system for the runway.
Sloulin Field International Airport in North Dakota will receive $14.2m to support the fifth phase of an airport construction project.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia will be provided with $11.5m to build a de-icing pad for aircraft and to repair an apron.
