Fraport Greece is set to start reconstruction work at the Kos Airport located on the island of Kos, Greece.

The developmental work programme will commence with the restoration of damaged asphalt layers on the runway and the apron, which will require a partial suspension of operations from 4-19 March this year.

During the period, all emergency operations including medical and rescue flights will be carried out by helicopters.

Fraport Greece CEO Alexander Zinell said: “Our plan for the massive overhaul of Kos airport has begun. The safety of our passengers is a top priority for us, and for this reason, the reconstruction of the runway and apron pavement has been scheduled during the off-season.

“Following the completion of the construction work, the total size of the airport is expected to increase by 201%.”

The development work at the airport includes construction of a new 23,106m2 terminal and a fire station, as well as refurbishment and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant.

The scope of work also includes increasing the number of check-in desks to 28 from 16, as well as more than doubling security lanes to a total of nine from the current four.

Following the completion of the construction work, the total size of the airport is expected to increase by 201%.

Last year, Kos Airport witnessed a 20.7% increase in passenger traffic, serving around 2.3 million people.
