London Gatwick airport in the UK is trialling an advanced Smart Stand technology, with the aim of cutting aircraft turnaround times.
The trial, conducted in partnership with easyJet, involves a Turn Coordinator (TCO) managing aircraft turns remotely, with the aid of automated record-keeping and artificial intelligence (AI) predictions on departure readiness.
The technology allows jet bridge operators to oversee aircraft turns from a central control room, speeding up the turnaround process and maintaining on-time departures.
London Gatwick Innovation head Abhi Chacko said: “Smart Stand has the potential to significantly improve the aircraft turn process, bringing a range of benefits to airlines, ground handlers, the airport and most importantly, passengers.
“Once this innovation is approved for regular operations, it will enable aircraft to enter the Smart Stand and let passengers out, without anyone having to physically go the stand. This trial highlights our commitment to finding innovative solutions and we are excited to review the results.
The Smart Stand system is designed to improve the staff experience by centralising passenger arrival management and simplifying reporting with automated tools.

This trial is a key component of VINCI Airports’ strategy to enhance airport infrastructure and operations through the adoption of advanced solutions across its global network of over 70 airports in 13 countries.
Gatwick serves as an Innovation Centre of Excellence within the VINCI Airports network, and the Smart Stand is the latest in a series of solutions from the airport.
These innovations, including the Airport Community App, have been adopted by other airports within the VINCI network.
In March this year, London Gatwick finished building a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET) to reduce delays by offering pilots a more efficient exit point.
