The Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) in the US has announced a collaboration between a local artist, construction officials and Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to work on a new terrazzo floor in the airport’s airside terminal centre core.
The floor will be designed by artist Clayton Merrell, who is an art professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
To occupy close to 69,000ft², the floor will feature silhouettes of five iconic views and prominent landmarks of Pittsburgh. The central element would feature a vast blue sky with clouds, contrails and inlaid aircraft.
Allegheny County executive Rich Fitzgerald said: "One of the goals of my administration is to promote the cultural heritage and artistic development of Allegheny County with public art, thereby enhancing the county’s character and identity and contributing to economic development and tourism.
"Since Pittsburgh International is the region’s welcome centre to the world, this project will have a positive impact for visitors and residents."
Current plan is to install the floor in different phases within a time period of approximately 14 to 18 months.

By GlobalDataThe project is funded through the airport authority’s capital budget and will cost nearly $4m.
ACAA board chairman David Minnotte said: "When completed, travellers will encounter a modern floor surface with a rich design that captures the unique heritage of Pittsburgh, highlights our shared experiences and complements Airmall’s award-winning concessions program, completing a total transformation of the centre core."
The floor construction is the company’s first major construction in more than 20 years. It follows the $10m Airmall project that was initiated to transform the airport into a hub for fashion and speciality retail shops.
