Syria has called for UN sanctions against Israel, terming the latest airstrikes on Damascus ‘a heinous crime against Syria’s sovereignty’.

Syria has accused Israel of carrying out two airstrikes near Damascus International Airport and in the town of Dimas on Sunday.

The Syrian military said in a statement: "This afternoon, the Israeli enemy targeted two safe areas in Damascus province, namely the Dimas area and the Damascus International Airport."

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdurrahman said that the strike near the Damascus International Airport targeted a depot reportedly holding Iranian missile systems destined for Hezbollah.

The other attack was carried out near Dimas on hangars in and around a small air base, he added.

"Moscow is deeply worried by this dangerous development, the circumstances of which demand an explanation."

Damascus International Airport is used by both civilian and military aircraft. While no casualties were reported, the Syrian army stated that the attacks had caused damages to the airport.

The attacks were jointly condemned by the Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers in Tehran. Russia has also expressed concern over the attacks and demanded an explanation from Israel.

Haaretz quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich as saying: "Moscow is deeply worried by this dangerous development, the circumstances of which demand an explanation."

Israel has neither denied nor confirmed the strikes but said that it will not allow sophisticated weapons to fall into the hands of its enemies, AFP reported.

In May 2013, Israel launched a series of airstrikes near Damascus targeting what Israeli officials said were shipments of Iranian-made Fateh-110 missiles bound for Hezbollah.
