The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation to assess whether an air traffic control (ATC) or pilot error led to a close call between two passenger planes at JFK International Airport over the weekend.

On 18 January, a JetBlue Airways flight to Austin was forced to abort its take off when an arriving Caribbean Airlines plane from Guyana crossed its path on the runway without authorisation, with both coming about 3,000ft of each other.

According to the orders from air traffic controllers to cancel takeoff and stop, the JetBlue flight exited the runway and returned back to the gate.

"No injuries were reported as a result of the incident."

According to a statement from JetBlue, its passenger-packed, Flight 1295 aircraft had received control tower clearance when it headed full throttle down the airport’s runway. It later returned to the gate following the mishap.

The agency said no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

A total of nine airports, including Dulles Airport in Washington DC, have installed safety lights on the runway, while JFK, LaGuardia and Newark are yet to install them.

Further, the regulator is probing another incident involving a Delta Air Lines Boeing 777 that flew from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport towards Japan on Sunday morning, and reverting shortly following reports of smoke coming from the aircraft.

Last week, Delta Air Lines opened its $175m expansion to Terminal 4’s Concourse B at JFK Airport.
