A number of flight delays are expected at the Los Angeles International Airport in the US, as it is about to embark on a $250m construction project.
The construction project aims to expand runway buffer zones in the event of a plane overshooting a landing or takeoff, and would involve closure of one of the four runways on a rotating basis over the next four years.
Each runway at the airport is two miles long and between 200ft and 250ft wide and all planes have to land and take off in the same direction, toward the ocean.
The airport will soon begin work on the first runway, 25L on the south side of the airfield which will help increase the size of the safety areas at both ends of the runway.
Once the work on the runway is complete, airport crew would move on to the next runway, reported Long Beach Press-Telegram.
The airport will also make use of the shutdowns to carry on repairs and maintenance simultaneously on the concrete landing strips.

By GlobalDataLarger capacity planes that require more space for taking off can expect to face some weight restrictions as some runways will have to be shortened temporarily during the construction project.
Airport officials also informed that bad weather could also contribute to further delay in flight departures and landings. However, they added that they would have a better idea of how operations would be affected by the phased closings once they go into effect.
