Brazilian operator Embratel Star One has contracted US satellite manufacturer Space Systems Loral (SSL) for the Star One D2 multimission communications satellite.

Equipped with Ku, Ka, C and X-band transponders, the satellite is to be launched in 2019 from French Guiana.

Following its launch, the satellite will be able to provide quality entertainment and information services for consumers and businesses in Latin America.

It is also expected to extend broadband coverage to new regions, providing internet access to populations in remote areas.

“This high-capacity satellite will enable us to provide the world’s most advanced communications services to our customers.”

Star One D2 is planned to be positioned in a 70° West geostationary orbit, with a lifespan of 15 years or beyond.

Embratel Star One president Gustavo Silbert said: “This high-capacity satellite will enable us to provide the world’s most advanced communications services to our customers who will benefit from faster internet and more entertainment choices.

“With two SSL-built satellites currently providing service on orbit, we are pleased to once again contract with the team that we have come to know for a satellite that will help us update our coverage in important regions.”

In a separate development, Embratel Star One and SSL selected Arianespace to launch the Embratel Star One D2 satellite.

An Ariane 5 rocket will be used to deploy the satellite that will join its predecessors Star One D1 and Star One C4, which were launched last year and in 2015, respectively.
