UK’s Heathrow Airport plans to trial steeper angles of approach to runways for landing aircrafts in an effort to reduce noise pollution.
While planes currently land at the airport at a three degree angle, the new initiative will see planes approach the runway at a 3.2 degree, reported the Telegraph.
The plan is part of the ten practical measures included in the airport’s ‘Blueprint for Noise Reduction’ aimed at reducing noise levels in the areas adjoining the airport.
The 3.2 degree approach angle was also one of the measures that the airport had included in its proposal submitted to the Airport Commission.
The Airport Commission has recommended the construction of a third runway at the airport, last month.
The suggestion has been met with criticism from several groups who have been opposing it for the potential increase in noise levels.
Heathrow director of sustainability and environment Matt Gorman said: "Heathrow has changed, and taken a new approach to addressing our impacts on communities, including when it comes to noise.

By GlobalData"Our Blueprint to cut aircraft noise have been driven by feedback from local communities. Its role is to challenge the industry to think innovatively about ways to reduce noise.
"Steeper approaches are just one step in the right direction, and along with other quieter operating procedures and incentives to bring quieter aircraft into operation, will ensure fewer people are affected by noise, even with an expanded airport."
Steeper aircraft approaches have already been implemented by the Frankfurt Airport in Germany.
Heathrow has deployed mobile noise monitors for the duration of the trial and a report will be issued once the findings of the trial are summarised.
