The Ethiopian Government has reportedly unveiled plans for the construction of an international airport in the country’s capital city Addis Ababa.
Announced by Ethiopia Minister for Transport Workneh Gebeyehu at the Airport and Infrastructures and maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) conference, the new international airport is expected to serve up to 120 million passengers every year.
Gebeyehu was quoted by local media sources as saying: "The new mega hub will move the aviation industry in Ethiopia to a higher level. It will make Addis Ababa the aviation hub of Africa.
"The new airport will be the second mega project in the country (next to the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam)."
The airport is proposed to be built in several phases in a span of four to five years. On completion, it will feature four runways and an undisclosed number of passenger terminals.
In November 2014, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) commissioned ADPI, a French consultancy firm, to conduct a study on the mega hub airport development project.
