German airline Lufthansa has developed a new easy-to-use baggage tracing solution, WorldTracer, to help speed-up the arrival of delayed or mishandled bags to passengers.

The WorldTracer system features a simple desktop interface that can easily record delayed luggage and locate missing bags worldwide.

Airport operators, ground handlers and airlines can use the WorldTracer system’s global baggage data through the new interface.

This data can be combined with reservation or operation systems to trace missing or delayed bags.

Lufthansa Commercial and Passenger vice-president Guenter Friedrich said: "Every passenger wants their bag to arrive at their destination and Lufthansa strives to ensure that each passenger is reunited with their baggage at the end of their journey.

"However, in those rare situations where baggage is delayed, this new, user-friendly version of WorldTracer makes it possible for agents to quickly trace a bag and return it to its owner."

The WorldTracer technology has been jointly developed and funded by Lufthansa and the global IT provider SITA.

SITA Europe president Dave Bakker said: "Technology has played a vital role in reducing the number of mishandled bags, saving the industry $18bn since 2007.

"This new, user-friendly version of WorldTracer makes it possible for agents to quickly trace a bag and return it to its owner."

"However, unforeseen situations such as weather delays can still result in a bag being mishandled.

"This new, easy-to-use application of WorldTracer speeds up the process of tracing and recovering mishandled baggage and provides further cost savings for airlines, airports and ground handlers."

The new technology can be installed easily and economically across the globe due to SITA’s worldwide presence, with 450 airlines and ground handlers at over 2,500 airports.
