Located in Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi Airport is one of the major international airports in the country. The airport handled more than 2.2 million passengers in 2016 and the passenger numbers are anticipated to increase further in the coming years.
In order to cater to the anticipated passenger traffic, airport operator TAV Georgia upgraded the airport facilities. Construction of the new arrivals terminal was initiated in June 2016 as part of the infrastructure development project launched in October 2015.

The infrastructure development project further included the rehabilitation of runways and taxiways, construction of five parking lots and a passenger bridge.
The new arrivals terminal was completed in September 2017 and the project created more than 500 jobs during the construction phase.
Details of the new arrivals terminal at Tbilisi International Airport
The new terminal project and other developments at the airport are a result of a new contract signed by the Georgian Government with TAV Georgia.
The new terminal was designed by İki Mimar, an architecture and consultancy firm based in Ankara, Turkey. The design includes new boarding bridge with two exits to serve two aircraft simultaneously. It also features four bus gates, five baggage carousels and five new aircraft parking positions.
The terminal is spread over a 12,000m² area and has the capacity to handle more than 3.25 million passengers a year.
Main runway renovation project
The airport’s main runway, which underwent a major overhaul, was re-opened in July 2016. The renovated runway now has a total area of 135,000m². It has been resurfaced with 135,000t of asphalt and fitted with new navigation lights, which further improves the flight safety level of the runway.
The instrument landing system was also upgraded from CAT I to CAT II to enable the aircraft to better fly or land during poor weather conditions.
The upgraded runway now meets international standards and is ready to handle future air traffic growth and larger aircraft. The total investment for the renovation project was more than $30m.
The development project also included rehabilitation of the taxiways, which cover a total area of 73,600m².
Contractors involved with the runway rehabilitation project
Airfield lighting solutions provider OCEM was appointed to supply, deliver and install runway guard lights, LED stop bar signals and guidance signs at holding positions on the airport’s main runway. The company also upgraded the airfield lighting control and monitoring system, as well as installed new lighting signals on all four taxiways.
Ground transportation at Tbilisi airport
Tbilisi Airport is connected by rail and road transportation facilities. A rail line connects the airport with the Tbilisi central railway station. An airport railway station is located 70m from the airport building. Trains with a capacity of 100 passengers run on the line.
Road transportation facilities include public buses, taxis and shuttle service. A public bus stop located in front of the airport’s arrival halls offers 24/7 services between the airport and the city centre.
Passengers can find taxi services outside the terminal building, while the shuttle services offer trips to city centre with three stops.
Airport parking at Tbilisi
The main car park at the airport is located in front of the terminal. By using latest technology, it provides comfortable and safe parking area, as well as serves all customer requirements.
With two entry and exit points, the car park has the capacity to accommodate 658 cars. Vehicles enter the park through the electronic entry barrier.
Another parking area named CIP Primeclass car park is located towards the right of the terminal building, beside the main car park.
