FedEx Express president and CEO David Bronczek said: "Acquiring additional 767F aircraft is a continuation of our very successful air fleet modernisation programme and will enable us to reduce structural costs, improve our fuel efficiency and enhance the reliability of our global network."

FedEx plans to use the new aircraft to replace its existing freighters, including Boeing MD10s and MD11s, and Airbus A300-600s and A310s, reported Reuters. As of 31 May, the company has 641 freighter aircraft.

A Boeing spokesman said: "We appreciate the confidence that FedEx has shown in the 767."

Developed in the 1980s, the 767 made twin-engine jets available for long-range flights.

FedEx Express is said to be the last remaining customer for the 767 aircraft, as the passenger version is being dominated by next-generation Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A330.
