The airport’s two passenger terminals are being renovated to expand the passenger capacity and improve facilities. The renovation was initiated in January 2015 and is expected to be fully completed in 2017.
Terminal features of Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport
The airport has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 has a total floor space of 52,000m² (560,000ft²), 25 gates and an annual passenger capacity of 4.5 million, while Terminal 2 has an annual capacity of 8.5 million, an 57,800m² (622,000ft²) area and 29 gates. Both terminals provide air services to Schengen and non-Schengen passengers.
The passenger facilities in Terminal 1 include an eight-room business centre and a conference room with a capacity of 250 people. It also includes shops, restaurants, ATMs, bars and free internet facility. The airport is equipped with SITA’s beacon technology which delivers location-specific information for passengers through a new airport app.
The airport also includes a freight terminal with 30,000mt a year capacity.
Details of the passenger terminal renovation
The renovation involves redesigning the existing buildings, and extensions to create a passenger path, bigger operating areas, greater traffic capacity and a more dynamic retail area. The overall retail surface area at the terminals is more than doubled from the existing 1,226m² (13,196ft²) to 2,631m² (28,319ft²).
The renovation is being completed in two phases with the first phase comprising expansion of Terminal 1 airside commercial space to 3,553m² (38,244ft²) and renovation of central security areas and travel retail store layouts. Renovations on Terminal 1 were completed by May 2016 and the terminal officially opened in June 2016.
Terminal 2 renovations will include adding a 4,300m² (46,284ft²) area to the eastern side of the terminal and doubling the retail and waiting areas. Renovations are expected to be complete by May 2017.
Baggage handling systems at Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport
ALSTEF was selected as the prime contractor to integrate the baggage handling system in Terminal 1. Its contractual scope includes installation of a centralised checked baggage screening area, including three EDS machines served by a network of Destination Coded Vehicles (DCV autover®) that are also used to sort the bags by destination.
Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in France laid the first stone for the construction of Future Terminal 1 in December 2014.
BEUMER Group was contracted to supply BEUMER autover® DCV baggage handling and transportation system for Terminal 1 in August 2013.
Other contractors involved with the renovation
In April 2015, Aelia was contracted to provide alcohol, tobacco, perfume, cosmetics and gastronomy at both passenger terminals for eight years. Dufry and Relay France were contracted to provide gastronomy, and regional food and chic souvenirs respectively.
In February 2015, SSP was awarded a €180m ($205m) contract to operate ten food and beverage offerings at the airport for 11 years.
Nice Côte d’Azur international airport runways
The airport has two runways and two helipads. The first runway (04L/22R) is 2,570m-long and paved with bituminous and concrete. The second runway (04R/22L) is 2,960m-long and is also surfaced with bitumen and concrete.
The two helipads are 29.25m-long and surfaced with asphalt and concrete.
