Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport is located in Geziemir, Turkey. The airport, which is the fourth busiest airport in the country, serves Izmir, an important seaside metropolis of Turkey.
Izmir is the third most populated city in Turkey with 2.78 million people as of 2011. The city is also one of the biggest tourist and import-export centres of the country, behind Istanbul and Bursa.

In 2013, around 10.2 million passengers passed through the airport, which is owned by Turkish State Airport Authority (DHMI) and operated by TAV Airports.
TAV and DHMI signed a contract for construction of a new domestic terminal and car park at the airport. Construction of the $361.6m project started in June 2012 and was completed in 2014.
Izmir Adnan Menderes International terminal
The airport’s international terminal was inaugurated in September 2006, while construction of the 110,000m² building started in May 2005. The terminal, which has a total apron area of 150,000m², is designed to handle five million passengers per year.
The terminal includes six check-in islands with 66 check-in units equipped with Common Use Technical Equipment (CUTE) workstations. It has 18 passport counters in the departure floor and 16 passport counters at the arrivals floor. The terminal building also includes 36 elevators, 25 escalators, 26 travelators, nine bridges and eight bus gates.
The terminal has six baggage claim carousels with a baggage handling capacity of 4,800 baggage units per hour. The duty free area of the terminal is spread over 2,403m² and includes 11 stores. The terminal also includes a catering area of 6,199m².
Cargo terminal
The airport houses a state-of-the-art cargo terminal, which can handle radioactive materials, as well as refrigerated storage units and partitions for storing valuable goods. It also has offices of Turkish Airlines Cargo and PTT (Post Office), and Customs Duty Management buildings. THY’s import and export warehouses are also located in the terminal.
General aviation terminal
The general aviation terminal of the airport provides private access for passengers travelling in their business jets and airline passengers opting for boutique service concept. It offers fast, safe and comfortable service to charted passengers.
Passengers using the terminal can reduce travelling times. Wireless internet service is provided in the terminal enabling business travellers to stay connected to work. The terminal also provides a complimentary buffet food service.
New domestic terminal
The new domestic terminal of the airport has a built-up area of 291,267m², and includes 64 check-in counters, 40 elevators, 30 escalators and 666 travelators. It includes eight bridges to support the passenger boarding operation and will have a new 82,500m² multi-storey car park, providing 2,537sheltered and 3,000 open car parking spaces.
The terminal is built according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and will be operated by TAV Ege until 2032.
It marginally increases the capacity of the airport and enhances operational efficiency. It reduces the waiting and travelling time for passengers and encourages domestic passengers to travel through the airport. This will in turn foster economic growth of the airport. The new terminal is also expected to eliminate the need for building a new airport.
The terminal building consists of indoor gardens, pools and spacious internal areas. Its 29m vaulted roof enables passengers at the check-in lounge to view the parked aircraft, the apron and the planes taking off.
A trigeneration plant installed at the terminal generates heating and cooling energy in addition to power generation.
Runways
The airport has two runways designated as 34R/16L and 34L/16R. Both runways are 3,240m long and 45m wide.
Ground transportation and parking
The airport is connected by Izmir Metro, the city’s subway network which has two lines – North Line and South Line with 31 stations. The airport station is located in front of the domestic terminal.
Taxis and bus services provide road link to the airport. Additionally the airport is connected through waterways by means of ferries.
The airport’s car park area is spread across an area of 69,168m². It has a capacity to accommodate 2,237 vehicles.
