Chilean airline LATAM Airways has announced the order of five additional 787 Dreamliner Boeing aircraft boosting its position as the largest operator of the 787 family across South America.
Alongside previous orders, this deal brings LATAM’s 787 fleet to 46, demonstrating its commitment to modernising and providing an efficient fleet.
LATAM intends to equip the 787 aircraft with GEnx engines from GE Aerospace, a first-ever for a South American carrier.
Ramiro Alfonsín, LATAM Airlines Group S.A CFO emphasised how the engines will provide flexibility across operations.
Alfonsin said: “The incorporation of GEnx engines is a decision that provides greater flexibility and options for the expansion of the long-range fleet.
“Furthermore, increasing The Boeing 787 fleet size will allow the group to operate with two different engine models, known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact, in a complementary way.”

Mike Wilson, vice president of Latin America and Caribbean Sales at Boeing emphasised the sustainability benefits of the 787 Dreamliner.
Wilson said: “The 787 Dreamliner is perfectly suited to support LATAM group’s sustainability and operations goals with its exceptional performance, flexible route capability and enhanced passenger comfort”.
“We look forward to partnering with LATAM group as it connects Latin America with the world and makes a difference in the communities it serves.
According to LATAM’s sustainability targets, the group aims to reduce and offset 50% of domestic emissions by 2030.
The 787 Dreamliner family, according to Boeing, carry the potential to reduce emissions by 20-25% and feature reduction capabilities of hydrocarbons and NOX.
“These actions are fully aligned with the commitment to sustainability and brings LATAM closer to the goal of becoming a carbon neutral group by 2050” added Alfonsin.
LATAM now operates 332 aircraft, including 56 Boeing passenger aircraft models: 767, 777, and 787, and 256 Airbus aircraft models: A319, A320, A320neo, A321 and A321neo.
